2006 Trends in Nursing Education
There were several trends seen in 2006 in the field of nursing and the education that nurses are receiving. Many of these trends are continuations from past years, but are ones that it is important to be aware of for those in the field.
Nursing Education Trends Include :
- Location of Classes – Due to the internet, nurses are now able to take classes from the comfort of their own home or even their office. They no longer have to travel to a physical site across town to sit in a classroom. This flexibility allows the busy nurse to schedule training at a time that is convenient for him/her and does not interfere with their other professional or personal obligations and responsibilities.
- Format of Classes – the use of the internet, not only reduces travel time and increases convenience, but also offers different types of learning to occur. Those who learn better visually are able to read through material at their own pace and then interact with the instructor or classmates through message boards set up to share information and experiences. Often video and audio files are available to go along with written materials.
- Amount and Types of Classes Offered – the number of classes being offered to nurses continues to grow as new courses are added each year. This again, in part, is due to the internet and the ability for institutions to add classes, but keep overhead administrative costs down. Nurses are now being offered personal skills classes that will be helpful on the job, such as dealing with difficult people, stress management, and time management, as well as the clinical and medical topics that have traditionally been offered.
- Who is Offering Classes – nurses also have new choices in where they obtain their education. In the past, it was only at a traditional institution, but now, private institutions have been developed and are continuing to open. These organizations specialize in offering only nursing education courses and generally offer a wide range of classes, particularly classes offered virtually.
- Technology Changes – over the past several years, the nursing field has continued to get more technical as new advancements have been introduced. Nurses are now being required to embrace this technology and become proficient at a fast rate. This includes techniques such as computerized charting, as well as the use of PDAs and other handheld devices to make patient information readily available and to be tracked.
In educational settings, nurses are also being trained and tested via computerized simulations that allow for greater understanding and knowledge to be verified. It also allows the nurses to have more hands-on learning than has been offered in the past.
These trends in nursing education are allowing nurses to receive training at their own pace and schedule, and are allowing new ways of learning to be incorporated into the courses that are offered. Nurses are also being given the opportunity to choose specialized learning institutions that are focusing solely on nursing education and being taught ways to use technology to make their job easier and to provide better patient care
